The UK will leave the EU single market on 31 December 2020 at 11pm. From 1 January 2021 the UK Conformity Assessment or UKCA marking will gradually replace the UK CE marking, for most goods, the CE marking will end on 31 December 2022, and a transition period during this period is acceptable.
The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a mandatory mark on the product. It covers most goods which previously required the CE marking, known as ‘new approach’ goods. The manufacturer or authorised representative can be responsible for affixing the UKCA mark to the product, which is the same principle as the CE mark.
"CE Marking" is a process that applies to a variety of products, and must be completed by manufacturers in the EU or importers of goods in the EU.
Technically, the differences between the requirements for CE marking and UKCA marking are minimal. Most of the differences between the two systems are administrative in nature.
Currently, many aspects are the same. The product range, technical requirements and conformity assessment procedures are initially the same for the two different markets.
No, the UKCA logo is only available in the UK (including England, Scotland and Wales). The CE mark is used in Northern Ireland, in line with the EU single market for goods. Therefore, products placed on the market in the UK must bear the UKCA mark, regardless of their country of origin.
In order to implement the new system, the UK government has revised most of the UK CE marking regulations for products on the UK market, and stipulated that the UKCA mark replaces the CE mark.
1. Replace the CE mark with the UKCA mark,
2. Restrict the applicability of products to the UK market,
1. In many cases a UK address (importer or authorised representative) is required on the product or on accompanying documents.
2. If our product needs EU certification body certification, then it also needs UK certification body certification, and finally we can legally carry the UKCA mark.
3. By the end of 2022, we will need to update the markings for products sold in the UK to include the UKCA marking.
4. The EU Notified Body will need to re-issue the Notified Body Certificate in order for our CE Mark to remain valid.
